Description:

GRREC is pleased to present Kagan Cooperative Learning: Structuring for Academic Engagement for teachers and administrators of all grade levels. Kagan Structures, which are supported by a large body of research, are highly effective cooperative learning strategies designed to create full engagement for all students. In this two-day session, participants will learn easy ways to use Kagan Structures as a part of every lesson, creating greater engagement, deeper understanding of content, improved retention, and greater liking of class and content.  If you want more fun in teaching, highly engaged students who love your classroom, and elevated test scores, this workshop is for you!

Alternate Assessment Participation Guidelines

Description of training: This session is designed to provide guidance and support to Admissions and Release Committee (ARC) members in the application of the recently revised KY Alternate Assessment Participation Guidelines.  Participants will engage in an in-depth look at each participation criterion and the relevant data and sources of evidence to support each decision.  Teams will have the opportunity to practice determining participation in Alternate Assessment by synthesizing student case study data from various scenarios. 

The KDE Alternate Assessment and Diploma Advisory Group highly recommends anyone who works with a student with a significant cognitive disability to complete the online training modules. The modules can be found at this link: https://learn.hdi.uky.edu/product-category/k-12-special-education/spdg-1-training/  There are 5 online modules and required modules will vary depending upon the school position.

NOTE:  Interested participants must have completed the online training modules and quizzes prior to the session. Participants must bring Certificates documenting completion of each required module with them to the work session. 

Learning Targets:

  • Participants will be familiar with the new AA Participation Guidelines form
  • Participants will learn the appropriate data needed for determining eligibility for Alternate Assessment participation through case study data and practice.

Low Indicence CCR Alternate Assessment

Description:

The CCR Alternate Assessment has been piloted and will be implemented into the Kentucky accountability system in 2018-19 school year.  This session will provide an overview of the CCR measures for school high school (HS) teams who serve students with low incidence disabilities.  This training is appropriate for those who have not been previously trained or who would like an update.

Learning Targets:

  • Learn the rationale and purpose for the CCR revisions
  • Identify revised components & measures for CCR for students on AA
  • Understand the process and implementation for CCR
  • Increase awareness of post-secondary opportunities for students on AA
  • Increase understanding of work-based learning options
  • Complete a self-assessment and develop an action plan to prepare for upcoming CCR changes

Using LDC for Stronger Student Writing

Description:

You are registering for a 3-day workshop for K-12 special education teachers, content teachers, and instructional coaches. Participants will work with tools provided by the Literacy Design Collaborative and Achieve the Core to strengthen their understanding of the reading-writing connection. They will utilize resources to craft engaging and standards-aligned writing tasks, focus on purposeful sequencing of assignments, and create plans for writing evaluation and effective feedback.

Virtual and face-to-face support will be offered during the semester. On the final workshop day (May 8), teachers will evaluate their writing prompts and representative student culminating task writing samples/presentations. They will then revise or add to their projects for further student success

Book Baskets: Focusing on the Reading-Writing Connection

Description:

You are registering for a 3-day workshop for primary and intermediate special education teachers, content teachers, instructional coaches, and media/technology specialists. Participants will work with a standards-based protocol to measure and select appropriately complex texts, develop an engaging topic, work through resources to help them locate appropriately challenging complex texts, learn how to sequence them to systematically increase student skill, vocabulary, and knowledge, and explore electronic resources for use in engaging and adding to the knowledge base of students. 

 Virtual and face-to-face support will be offered during the semester. On the final workshop day (May 1), teachers will evaluate their Book Basket Projects and representative student culminating task writing samples/presentations. They will then revise or add to their projects for further student success.
